Bay (Laurus nobilis) traditionally used in witchcraft, magical workings, ritual and folk practice.

This listing is for 10 leaves of dried Bay, carefully grown, harvested and dried here in Derbyshire without the use of harmful chemicals.

Bay is one of those wonderfully familiar herbs where an everyday kitchen ingredient meets a long history of magical tradition.

Its associations with success, protection, wisdom and vision make it an especially useful herb for a beginner's collection, while its connection with manifestation and wish magic gives it a particularly practical place in spellwork.

Bay is also a wonderfully accessible herb. You may already have some in your kitchen, and Bay trees can be grown successfully in the UK.

Bay is one of the 12 herbs we recommend for a beginners magic herb collection, read about our 12 beginner herbs here.

History

Bay has been used for 1000's of years, it's believed that the priestesses of Delphi chewed the leaves to induce visions.

Garlands of Laurel leaves have since ancient times been used as a garland presented to winners.

Witchcraft Uses

Bay has a number of simple traditional workings that make it particularly approachable if you're new to working with magical herbs.

One of the best-known beginner practices is to write an intention or wish on a Bay leaf and then burn the leaf to release the wish or intention.

Bay also appears in traditional love practices. To help ensure that a love will remain between a couple, the couple should break a twig from the Bay tree and then break the twig in two, with each person keeping one half.

Bay can also be incorporated into workings concerned with protection, purification, success, wisdom, vision and manifestation.
